The iconic US comedy show Saturday Night Live is in the midst of celebrating its milestone 50th season. After captivating fans with appearances by Jelly Roll and Coldplay in the season opener, the third episode raised the stakes with a guest spot by rock legend Stevie Nicks. Hosted by pop sensation Ariana Grande, the episode featured Nicks delivering a moving performance in New York.
Nicks, a member of Fleetwood Mac and a celebrated solo artist, stunned the SNL audience with two songs. She performed her freshly released single "The Lighthouse," a poignant track inspired by the repercussive overturning of Roe v. Wade. The 1973 decision had previously rendered abortion bans unconstitutional, and Nicks was moved to express her reaction through music. Reflecting on her creative process, she explained, “This may be the most important thing I ever do,” emphasizing the song’s role as an anthem for women’s rights in the United States.
In addition to "The Lighthouse," Nicks delivered a spirited rendition of "Edge of Seventeen," the popular third single from her 1981 debut solo album, Bella Donna. Her SNL performance marked her return to the iconic stage after an absence since 1983, following her Wild Heart tour when she last performed "Stand Back" and "Nightbird" on the show.
The episode, however, had its share of hits and misses. It featured a sketch with cast members Austin Johnson and Sarah Sherman attempting to impersonate famously feuding brothers Noel and Liam Gallagher. The sketch, marred by inaccurate accents, did not land well, especially with Liam Gallagher himself.
Despite this hiccup, the season promises more memorable moments, building on its rich history. Paul Simon remains the most frequent musical guest on SNL with 14 appearances, followed by the Foo Fighters with 11, and Coldplay with 10. This season, Stevie Nicks’ powerful performance takes its place among the show’s many legendary musical moments.
