Transformative $200 Crore Investment: Assam Government Tackles Guwahati’s Urban Flooding with Passion
The Integrated Urban Flood Risk Management Project in Guwahati has mapped out strategic measures to tackle urban flooding, with a proposed budget of Rs 200 crore. The initiative aims to incorporate both structural and non-structural solutions to address this ongoing challenge, exacerbated by climate change.
Himanta Biswa Sarma, using his X handle, emphasized the project’s goal to establish resilient infrastructure, announcing a significant investment of ₹200 crore to mitigate urban flood risks in Guwahati.
Key structural developments include constructing stormwater drains in crucial areas like the stretch from Excelcare Boragaon to Deepor Beel, the southern side of NH27 from Khanapara to Basistha Chariali, and from Juripar to Silsako Sarumotoria to Silsako, featuring a pumping station with a sump. Moreover, a flood protection wall will be erected along the Bahini river, from Rukminigaon PIBCO Point to Janata Bhawan. Enhancements to existing pump houses at Bharalu and Lakhmijan, as well as the implementation of silt traps and watershed management for surrounding hills, are also part of the plan. Additionally, the project aims to delay runoff via source control measures, employing underground retention tanks with modular eco-block arrangements.
On the non-structural front, the initiative introduces a Flood Early Warning System and SCADA System for pump house monitoring. It will also engage in capacity-building activities through training programs on urban flood management and enhance public awareness efforts. The utilization of technology-based solutions, including drones, will aid in monitoring the hills around Guwahati to assess flood damage, detect encroachment, and anticipate landslides.
Through these comprehensive measures, the project intends to fortify Guwahati against the increasing threat of urban flooding, ensuring a safer and more resilient urban environment for its residents.
