Shocking Alliance: North Korea Deploys Troops to Ukraine Backing Russia, Says South Korea’s Defense Chief
Seoul, October 8 (IANS) – South Korea’s Defence Minister Kim Yong-Hyun has indicated that North Korea might deploy its armed forces to Ukraine in support of Russia, marking an intensification of military cooperation between Pyongyang and Moscow. This strategic alliance stems from a mutual defense agreement established between North Korean leader Kim Jong-un and Russian President Vladimir Putin during summit discussions in June, as reported by Yonhap News Agency.
Minister Kim suggested that such a deployment is highly probable, given the treaty’s nature, akin to a military alliance. This possibility gains credibility following reports of North Korean troop casualties in a Russian-controlled area near Donetsk, Ukraine. The Kyiv Post recently reported that six North Korean officers were killed, and three others injured, during a Ukrainian missile strike on October 3, based on intelligence sources.
Additionally, during a parliamentary audit session, Kim addressed potential maritime disputes, asserting a firm response against any North Korean attempts to establish a new maritime boundary south of the existing Northern Limit Line (NLL). “The NLL is a line protected with blood. We will not stand for any alternative demarcation and will retaliate as necessary,” Kim stated emphatically.
Tensions are further amplified by North Korea’s reported parliamentary meeting for constitutional revisions, potentially aimed at removing unification clauses and solidifying territorial boundaries. Experts believe North Korea may unilaterally declare a new maritime border south of the NLL, potentially using it as a pretext for provocative actions.
The unfolding developments underscore the geopolitical complexities in the region and the growing closeness between North Korea and Russia amidst the Ukraine conflict, posing new challenges for international diplomatic efforts.
