Game-Changing Announcement: ZPM and MNF Reveal Dynamic Candidates for Nov 5 SHC Elections!
In Aizawl, the political scene is heating up as parties announce their candidates for the upcoming elections to the 12-member Silung Hills Council (SHC) in Mizoram, scheduled for November 5. The ruling Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM), the main opposition Mizo National Front (MNF), and the Hmar People’s Convention (HPC) have already revealed their candidates. While the Congress plans to announce its candidates soon, the BJP is also expected to enter the fray.
The ZPM and HPC have formed a pre-poll alliance with ZPM contesting 8 seats, and HPC vying for 4. Meanwhile, the MNF is partnered with the Hmar People’s Convention (Reformed) or HPC (R), with MNF contesting 10 seats and HPC (R) for 2.
ZPM is introducing three new candidates, with key figures like Sitting Chief Executive Member (CEM) Lalvenhima Hmar and incumbent council chairman HC Lalmalsawma seeking re-election. The MNF and HPC(R) have also announced 12 candidates, with a majority being newcomers.
Vote casting in the SHC will engage 23,789 eligible voters, including 11,914 women. Important deadlines include October 10 for nomination filings and October 14 for withdrawal of candidature. Nomination scrutiny will occur on October 11, and vote counting will begin immediately after polling ends on November 5.
The SHC comprises 12 constituencies, covering 31 villages in Mizoram’s northeastern Hmar-dominated region. The last poll in 2019 saw the MNF-HPC coalition win 10 seats, while power dynamics have shifted over time, with the ZPM-HPC alliance now in control.
Established on July 9, 2018, the SHC resulted from a peace accord between the Mizoram government and the Hmar People’s Convention (Democratic). As the election date approaches, Mizoram’s political landscape is poised for a keen contest.
