Urgent Call for Transparency: House GOP Chairman Demands FEMA Accountability for Hurricane Helene Response
Rep. Anthony D’Esposito, head of a House Homeland Security subcommittee, has requested detailed information from FEMA Administrator Deanne Criswell on the agency’s preparations for Hurricane Helene, particularly its forecasting models, resource pre-positioning, and coordination with various levels of government. Hurricane Helene, which hit Big Bend, Florida on September 26, caused severe flooding across Southern states, resulting in over 200 deaths and significant destruction in North Carolina and Tennessee.
FEMA has acknowledged receipt of the letter, confirming its commitment to working with Congress on hurricane relief efforts. Notably, homeland security adviser Liz Sherwood-Randall stated that FEMA’s strategic pre-positioning in Big Bend saved lives, subsequently redirecting resources to the most impacted areas following landfall, with western North Carolina being the hardest hit.
While criticism has come from figures like former President Donald Trump, who claimed the agency mishandled its response, some North Carolina Republicans lauded FEMA’s efforts. Senator Thom Tillis expressed satisfaction with the agency’s work, despite acknowledging some logistical challenges. Rep. Chuck Edwards initially criticized FEMA’s response times, particularly in delivering essential supplies to western North Carolina. However, he later noted improvements after demanding immediate aid, which resulted in the delivery of crucial supplies and temporary cell towers to affected areas.
Currently, FEMA has provided over $110 million in assistance and deployed more than 6,400 personnel to help recovery efforts. The agency has also distributed millions of meals and liters of water, alongside providing generators and tarps to support the affected regions, as confirmed by FEMA’s spokesperson.
