Meta Platforms Inc., Facebook’s parent company, has unveiled an innovative AI tool named Movie Gen, capable of generating or editing videos using simple text prompts. This move intensifies Meta’s competition with AI leaders like OpenAI and Google. Movie Gen can create videos up to 16 seconds long, generate corresponding audio, edit existing content, or transform a photo into a personalized video using real people.
Currently, Movie Gen is accessible only to certain internal staff and select partners, including filmmakers. Meta plans to integrate this technology into its apps, such as Instagram and WhatsApp, in the next year. Connor Hayes, Meta’s VP of generative AI products, suggests this tool will boost video post creation, enhance user engagement, and assist creators, though final product plans remain undecided.
Meta’s pursuit of video-generating AI models reflects a larger tech industry trend, with competitors like OpenAI and Google’s DeepMind also developing similar technology. However, challenges remain: Movie Gen takes a lengthy “tens of minutes” to render videos—too long for casual users. Furthermore, Meta is addressing safety and ethical concerns, particularly regarding misuse for creating deepfakes without consent. Solutions include implementing watermarks to identify AI-generated content.
