Heart-Wrenching Unveiling: Victim’s Statue at RG Kar Hospital Sparks Outrage Among Netizens in Kolkata Rape and Murder Case
Nearly two and a half months after the tragic rape and murder of a postgraduate doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Hospital, a new controversy has surfaced with the installation of a statue titled ‘Cry of the Hour.’ The statue, created by artist Asit Sain, was placed near the hospital by junior doctors and is intended to symbolize the victim’s suffering and the ongoing protests. The statue has sparked backlash, with many considering it ‘disrespectful’ and ‘disturbing.’
Critics argue that the statue’s depiction is inappropriate and offensive to the memory of the victim. Comments on social media have expressed outrage, questioning the sensitivity of such an installation. A user on Twitter remarked on how disturbing it is to create a statue based on a rape victim. Another commenter called it “insensitive” to immortalize someone’s pain.
Trinamool Congress leader Kunal Ghosh also criticized the move, noting that it contravenes Supreme Court guidelines, which prohibit revealing a victim’s identity. He stressed that the installation goes against responsible conduct, even in the name of art.
Defending the act, Dr. Debdutt of RG Kar Hospital stated that the sculpture is symbolic and not intended to depict only the victim. He emphasized that the goal is to highlight the horror of the incident and to continue the fight for justice.
The case, involving the rape and murder at RG Kar Hospital on August 9, remains under investigation by the CBI and continues to be monitored by the Supreme Court. The statue controversy has added fuel to ongoing protests and debates surrounding the case.
