Exciting Breakthrough: Fresh Tender for Jorhat-Majuli Bridge as Gadkari Steers Visionary Project, Says Assam CM
Guwahati, Oct 3: The long-awaited construction of the Majuli-Jorhat bridge is poised to restart, as the Central government mulls issuing a new tender for the project. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma revealed this development, indicating that Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, is personally addressing the delay. Work is expected to resume soon following Gadkari’s assurance during a brief interaction with Sarma at Delhi Airport. Due to the previous contractor’s refusal to continue, a fresh tender is likely, with a decision forthcoming.
This announcement comes after Chief Minister Sarma dispatched a letter to Gadkari on September 27, urging his intervention to overcome the construction halt that began on September 5. Sarma emphasized the pressing need to capitalize on the dry season to avoid potential setbacks that could escalate costs and extend the timeline unnecessarily. Reports indicate that the initial contractor, UP State Bridge Corporation Limited, abandoned the site.
The project’s cessation has drawn criticism from the opposition, with Congress leader and Jorhat MP Gaurav Gogoi seeking clarification from Sarma after reports surfaced about contractor disputes and material relocation. Gogoi’s concerns echo the broader critique of governmental “mismanagement” surrounding the bridge.
Awarded in August 2021 to UP State Bridge Corporation Limited, the two-lane bridge is a significant venture for the region, with an estimated cost of Rs 650 crore. Slated for completion by December 2025, the Majuli-Jorhat bridge remains vital for regional connectivity and development.
As the stakeholders strive to address these hurdles, the focus remains on ensuring the project proceeds without further delay, reinforcing the bridge’s considerable importance to Assam’s infrastructure ambitions.
