Breaking News: Justice Triumphs as 11 Kuki Undertrial Prisoners Finally Freed After Delays
Eleven Kuki undertrial prisoners were transferred to the Saparmeina Police Station early today. Sources reveal these prisoners were due for release on bail a month ago, but delays occurred due to inadequate escort arrangements.
In a related event, two youths, Thokchom Thoithoiba and Oinam Thoithoi, abducted by suspected Kuki militants in Kangpokpi district on September 27, have been safely released. Their return after nearly a week of captivity was confirmed around 5 AM when they were handed over to the Superintendent of Police.
Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh announced the successful rescue on the microblogging site X, acknowledging the efforts of state and central government officials in ensuring the youths’ safe return. It is suggested by local sources that negotiations involving community leaders and authorities contributed to their release, though details about their health and the circumstances surrounding their abduction remain undisclosed.
Previously, Manipur MP Angomcha Bimol Akoijam appealed to Home Minister Amit Shah on October 2 for the safe recovery of the two youths, highlighting the ongoing communal tensions in the state since May 2023. The abduction took place when three young men from Thoubal district were en route to New Keithelmanbi for an SSC GD recruitment test on September 27. They were reportedly captured by suspected armed members of the Kuki community. While one youth was rescued by the Assam Rifles, Oinam Thoithoi Singh and Thokchom Thoithoiba Meitei remained in captivity until today’s release.
