Revolutionary Move: Govt to Empower Consumers with QR Codes on Liquor Bottles
Meghalaya Government to Implement QR Codes on Liquor Bottles to Boost Revenue
SHILLONG, Oct 1: The Meghalaya government is set to introduce QR code technology on liquor bottles sold within the state to enhance revenue generation, targeting Rs 500 crore from liquor sales for the current financial year. This initiative was announced by Cabinet Minister Kyrmen Shylla on Tuesday.
Shylla highlighted that although the use of holograms has already helped mitigate revenue leakage, the state government remains unsatisfied with the results. After thorough evaluation, the decision was made to implement QR codes on liquor bottles. This move, recently approved by the state cabinet, will apply to every bottle of Indian Made Foreign Liquor (IMFL) sold in Meghalaya.
"The QR code system will allow us to monitor and ensure there is no revenue leakage," Shylla stated. He further revealed that the Excise department’s proposal is currently being processed, with an emphasis on expediting its implementation.
Interestingly, the cost of integrating QR code technology will fall on buyers rather than the government. Shylla expressed optimism that this new system could reduce revenue leakage by 5% to 10%, given that each bottle will feature a unique QR code for tracking.
Additionally, Shylla pointed out that the department’s revenue has seen a significant increase in recent years. With the introduction of this advanced tracking technology, the government aims to exceed its revenue target of Rs 500 crore from liquor sales this year.
This initiative underscores the Meghalaya government’s ongoing efforts to leverage technology in strengthening revenue collection and ensuring efficient monitoring. As the state moves forward with the QR code implementation, it reflects a broader commitment to curbing revenue losses and enhancing fiscal management.
The new QR code tracking system is poised to bring greater transparency and accountability to Meghalaya’s liquor market, promising a significant boost to the state’s coffers.
