Urgent Rally: Compassionate Congress Demands Immediate Aid for Flood Victims in Tripura
Tripura Congress Protests for Flood Victims, Alleges Govt. Neglect
Agartala: The opposition Congress party held statewide demonstrations on Monday, demanding adequate financial assistance for flood-affected residents in Tripura. Congress activists mobilized across all 21 sub-divisions, submitting deputations at sub-divisional magistrates’ offices.
Speaking to the media, Congress legislator and former minister Sudip Roy Barman emphasized the extensive damage and hardships endured by the flood victims. He criticized the Central government for its apparent lack of support, stating, “The so-called double engine Central government has not extended any aid to the state for flood relief. This shows how much importance the Central government gives to Tripura. People are starving and suffering severe losses, but there’s no one to pay attention.”
The catastrophic floods in August claimed the lives of at least 38 people and displaced over one lakh residents, destroying numerous homes in the process.
Barman also alleged that Congress workers faced attacks while advocating for flood victims in Mohanpur, Tripura West. “Nine people were seriously injured and are currently being treated. BJP goons attacked us inside the SDM’s office while we were there to speak on behalf of the flood victims. This is beyond fascism. We stand with the people and are fighting for their rights,” he stated.
The protests underscore the political tensions in Tripura and highlight the urgent need for effective disaster relief measures. The Congress party’s call for immediate government assistance aims to address the dire conditions faced by flood-impacted communities.
