Andhadhun Screenwriter Hemanth Rao Blasts IIFA for Disrespectful Treatment; Siddharth Stands Firm: ‘Artists Deserve Better!’
The recent edition of the International Indian Film Academy Awards (IIFA), held from September 27 to September 29 in Abu Dhabi, has incited controversy. Esteemed Kannada filmmaker Hemanth Rao criticized the event’s organizers for their disrespectful treatment at the IIFA Utsavam, a segment dedicated to Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, and Kannada cinema. Rao, known for directing acclaimed Kannada films like Godhi Banna Sadharana Mykattu and Sapta Saagaradaache Ello, took to Instagram to share his discontent. He recounted an experience filled with long waits and broken promises, stating that he and music director Charan Raj were left waiting until 3 AM, only to discover they would not receive the awards they had been assured.
Rao described the ordeal as “a massive inconvenience and extremely disrespectful.” Despite his extensive career and participation in numerous industry events, this incident was particularly distressing. Rao was also critical of the awards process itself, noting the absence of nominee announcements during the presentation. "The format this year was just to hand out the award. The nominees weren’t even mentioned," he lamented. Rao emphasized that award shows thrive on the talents they feature, remarking, “Your award shows run on the talent that you put on your stage, NOT THE OTHER WAY AROUND.”
Actor Siddharth, a staunch advocate for artists’ rights, supported Rao’s claims and expressed his own frustration over the disrespect that artists often face. He commented on Rao’s post, saying, “Sorry to know you and Charan had to go through this… disrespect towards artists at the hands of these middlemen will not end… but props to you for speaking out.”
The incident underscores ongoing concerns about the treatment of artists in the industry, amplified by the support from fellow industry figures like Siddharth. Their collective voice brings attention to the need for greater respect and transparency in entertainment award functions.
