Fury Unleashed: Emotive Chants of ‘Death to US’ at Delhi Event for Hezbollah’s Nasrallah with Iranian Envoy Present
At a condolence meeting for the deceased Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah held at the India Islamic Cultural Centre in New Delhi, attendees chanted ‘America Murdabad’ (Death to the US) while also commemorating Nasrallah. This event was attended by Iranian ambassador Dr. Iraj Elahi and Palestinian envoy Adnan Al-Hija. Videos accessed by News18 show attendees criticizing the US and Israel, with one individual rallying the audience into chanting anti-American slogans.
The Iranian envoy, Elahi, stated, “Hezbollah is not a terrorist group. Hezbollah is a political party. Hezbollah is strong enough to defend itself,” and reiterated Iran’s support for the organization. Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah was killed in an Israeli airstrike in Beirut, which was confirmed by both Hezbollah and the Israeli military. US President Joe Biden described Nasrallah’s death as a measure of justice for his victims, including thousands of Americans, Israelis, and Lebanese, and affirmed US support for Israel’s right to self-defense. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu labeled Nasrallah as “the terrorist” and deemed his killing necessary for altering the power dynamics in the region.
The ongoing conflict between Israel and Hezbollah in Lebanon has escalated alongside Israel’s confrontation with Hamas in Gaza. Over 1,000 people have been killed and more than 6,000 wounded due to Israeli attacks in the past two weeks, resulting in the displacement of around one million Lebanese. Hezbollah has been firing rockets into Israel in solidarity with Hamas, which has been combatively engaged with Israel since October 7, following a major Hamas attack that resulted in 1,200 Israeli deaths.
Palestinian envoy Adnan Al-Hija at the condolence meet remarked on the improbability of a ceasefire, criticizing the Israeli government and its strong military support from the US. He emphasized the challenges in halting the conflict amid the ongoing war in Gaza, which has led to significant casualties and displacement among Palestinians.
