Tripura’s Remarkable Safety Boost: Crime Down 10%, 3 Lakh Anti-Social Elements Targeted for a Safer Future
Tripura’s law enforcement has achieved notable progress in reducing crime, as reported by Director General of Police (DGP) Amitabh Ranjan. Following a review meeting with Chief Minister Manik Saha, DGP Ranjan disclosed a 10% reduction in overall crime rates and the apprehension of 3 lakh anti-social elements over the past three years.
“In 2014, the crime figure was 4,026; as of August 2024, it stands at 2,700,” highlighted Ranjan, marking the lowest crime rates in a decade despite the state’s population growth.
Efforts to curb various criminal activities have shown considerable success. Crimes against women have dropped from 2,700 to 1,500 cases, while incidents of physical violence have declined from 2,800 to 2,500.
Addressing the state’s drug issue, DGP Ranjan noted, “In narcotics, we have the highest seizure rate in the Northeast.” The number of NDPS (Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances) cases has surged from 83 to 512, reflecting intensified enforcement.
Border security has also been prioritized, with a 10% increase in the arrest of touts aiding illegal crossings. “We are detaining touts facilitating border crossings,” explained Ranjan, noting that roughly 2,000 individuals have been detained for illegal infiltration in the past three years.
Chief Minister Saha stressed the need to uphold law and order, especially during upcoming festivals. “There will be no compromise with law and order. We must ensure a peaceful Durga Puja and take action against extortion,” the DGP conveyed on behalf of the CM.
The police force has also ramped up preventive measures. “From 2022 to 2024, we have taken preventive action against 1.70 lakh people, and prosecution reports were submitted for over 1 lakh,” Ranjan added.
As Tripura fortifies its security measures, the DGP assured that senior police officers are actively engaged, collaborating closely with central agencies and border forces to further enhance public safety.
