Urgent Alert: Guwahati Schools Ramp Up Safety with Intensive Student Frisking and Bag Checks for Ultimate Protection
Guwahati Schools Implement Daily Bag and Pocket Checks for Student Safety
In a proactive move to ensure student safety and prevent incidents, the State Education Department of Guwahati has mandated daily checks of students’ bags and pockets in all government and private schools under Kamrup (Metro) district. This directive follows a tragic incident at Padumpukhuri High School in Darrang district, where a Class IX student was fatally attacked by a Class X student.
The education department’s order, effective immediately, requires class teachers to conduct these searches before classes commence each day. The step aims to detect any objectionable items, including weapons, and maintain a secure environment in schools. Education Minister Ranoj Pegu confirmed a separate investigation into the student’s death.
The initiative has received widespread support from teachers and parents. Subodh Chandra Bhattacharya, headmaster of Japorigog High School, mentioned that while bag checks for books and notebooks are routine, the current focus is on safety. On Friday, comprehensive checks were conducted, maintaining student privacy by involving gender-appropriate staff for frisking. No objectionable items were found.
Similarly, Jayanta Barman, principal of Krishna Nagar Vidyapeeth High School, highlighted the importance of collaboration between school authorities and parents to prevent students from bringing forbidden items to school. They reiterated their commitment to daily checks as per the department’s directive.
Parents have also welcomed the measure, acknowledging its role in preventing substance abuse and ensuring a safe school environment. A guardian from Gopal Boro Government Higher Secondary School expressed full support, emphasizing the collective responsibility to safeguard students.
The education department’s initiative serves as a significant step toward preventing untoward incidents and fostering a secure and conducive learning environment across the district.
