Regret and Betrayal: Dushyant Chautala’s Emotional Confession on Supporting BJP During Farmers’ Protest
Former Deputy Chief Minister Dushyant Chautala on Election Preparedness, Political Alliances, and Regrets
In an exclusive interview with The Hindu, Former Deputy Chief Minister and Jannayak Janta Party (JJP) leader Dushyant Chautala, contesting from his family stronghold Uchana Kalan in Jind for the upcoming Haryana Assembly elections, discussed several pressing issues.
Chautala acknowledged the challenges his party faces amid a dwindling support base and a wave of defections. He emphasized that political turbulence is not uncommon and assured that the JJP would strive to expand its base, recruit new members, and intensify its efforts.
Reflecting on his social media post about learning from mistakes, Chautala admitted imperfections in both political decision-making and governance. Specifically, he addressed the public sentiment regarding his decision to remain in office during the farmers’ agitation, which he now sees as a misstep.
When questioned about the resentment over JJP’s alliance with the BJP and their stance during the farmers’ protests, Chautala admitted the anger was palpable but temporary. He highlighted the achievements their participation in the government facilitated, such as increasing the old age pension to ₹3,000 and securing reservations for women and OBCs (A) in panchayats—policies that wouldn’t have been possible from the opposition.
Addressing criticisms of unfulfilled promises like 75% job reservation for local youth and the ₹5,100 monthly old age pension, Chautala explained that the job reservation law is currently sub-judice and that their efforts increased pensions significantly, contrasting it with BJP-ruled states’ lower pensions.
As for the alliance with Azad Samaj Party (ASP), Chautala dismissed caste politics, stressing their shared focus on youth empowerment. He predicted that a hung assembly is likely, positioning the JJP-ASP alliance as a pivotal player in the post-election landscape.
Chautala expressed no regret over the 2019 post-poll alliance with the BJP, except for their stance during the farmers’ agitation, underscoring the complexity of political decisions.
