Tripura Government’s Heartwarming Gift: Free Sugar, Flour, and Semolina for 9.83 Lakh Ration Card Holders!
The Tripura government is set to provide free sugar, flour, and semolina (suji) to the state’s 9.83 lakh ration cardholders. This initiative, announced during a press conference by Food, Civil Supplies, and Consumer Affairs Minister Sushanta Chowdhury on September 27, follows a cabinet decision led by Chief Minister Manik Saha.
Minister Chowdhury detailed that the distribution will include 1 kg of sugar, 2 kg of flour, and 500 grams of semolina per ration cardholder, an offering timed with the upcoming Durga Puja festivities and scheduled to commence in October. The cost of this initiative is estimated at Rs 6.84 crore.
Highlighting the unusual nature of the decision, Chowdhury pointed out that while these items are typically available at subsidized rates, this year’s distribution will be free due to recent flood-related hardships faced by the population. He confirmed that approximately 3000 MT of sugar has already arrived in the state, with ration shops beginning the distribution process.
Additionally, the Minister announced a state-level seminar on Consumer Rights and the inauguration of Consumer Clubs, set for September 30 with the Chief Minister in attendance.
In a move to modernize the distribution system, Tripura will upgrade paper-based ration cards to PVC or Smart Cards. The conversion process has started, with the Food Department collaborating with the National Informatics Centre (NIC) to roll out the new cards. By December, the upgrade is expected to cover all ration cardholders in Agartala Municipal Corporation areas, and in the following three months, it will extend to those who have completed E-KYC across the state.
This announcement underscores the state government’s commitment to supporting its citizens through challenging times and improving service delivery systems.
