World Rabies Day Celebrated in South West Garo Hills to Promote Rabies Elimination
Ampati: The Health Department of South West Garo Hills, in collaboration with the Veterinary and Education Departments, commemorated World Rabies Day at Birin Nuchong School on Friday. This year’s theme, "Breaking Rabies Boundaries," underscored a "One Health Approach to Rabies Elimination."
The event was graced by Betasing Block Development Officer (BDO) Crystal R. N. Sangma, who served as the chief guest. It successfully brought together students, teachers, and officials from various departments. A notable highlight was a poster-making competition where students demonstrated their creativity and understanding of rabies prevention, with winners receiving prizes from the chief guest.
In her address, Crystal R. N. Sangma emphasized the significance of observing World Rabies Day, stressing the crucial need for public awareness and preventive measures in the fight to eliminate rabies.
Dr. Gilsang Marak, Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Officer, provided an exhaustive presentation on the nature of rabies, preventive strategies, and the critical importance of vaccination for pets and livestock. He reiterated the ambitious goal of eradicating rabies in India by 2030.
Emphul Marak, Sub-Divisional School Education Officer (SDSEO), discussed the history of vaccination, the harmful consequences of rabies, and the necessity of pet vaccinations. He highlighted how advanced vaccination techniques are vital for protecting both pets and humans.
Additionally, Dr. Matgrik K. Sangma, Medical and Health Officer and District Nodal Officer for the National Rabies Control Programme, informed participants about immediate steps to take following an animal bite. He assured them of the safety of anti-rabies vaccines, even for pregnant women and infants.
Participants pledged their support for rabies eradication efforts and joined a rally aimed at raising public awareness among the citizens of Ampati.
The event served as a compelling reminder of the importance of collective action in combating this deadly disease.
