Ishan Kishan’s resurgence in red-ball cricket continues as he joins the Ruturaj Gaikwad-led Rest of India (RoI) squad for the Irani Cup, scheduled in Lucknow from October 1 to 5. Kishan, who recently scored a century for India C in the Duleep Trophy, marks his return to first-class cricket since July 2023, following the loss of his BCCI central contract. Along with Kishan, Dhruv Jurel is the other wicketkeeper in the squad, provided he is not selected for India’s second Test against Bangladesh in Kanpur from September 27 to October 1.
Left-arm pacer Yash Dayal and middle-order batsman Sarfaraz Khan are also included in the RoI and Mumbai squads, respectively, pending their Test squad commitments. Notably absent from the RoI squad is Mohammed Shami, who is easing back from ankle surgery and aiming to return in the Ranji Trophy starting October 11, having been included in Bengal’s probables.
Ajinkya Rahane will lead a strong Mumbai side featuring Shreyas Iyer, Prithvi Shaw, and Sarfaraz Khan. Rahane has maintained his red-ball form with Leicestershire in the County Championship. All-rounder Shardul Thakur is set for a comeback after foot surgery and has been named in Mumbai’s squad. Thakur has been out of professional cricket since IPL 2024 and looks forward to reclaiming his spot for India’s tour of Australia.
The match was initially slated to be held in Mumbai but was relocated due to potential monsoon disruptions.
