Supreme Court Powerfully Rejects Controversial NRI Quota in Punjab Medical Colleges, Sparking Hope for Local Students
The Supreme Court has censured the expansion of the non-resident Indian (NRI) quota in Punjab’s medical colleges, labeling it as fraudulent. The apex court highlighted that such maneuvers enable backdoor admissions, thereby marginalizing meritorious students. It upheld the Punjab and Haryana High Court’s decision to annul the Punjab Government’s notification extending the NRI quota for medical admissions.
A bench consisting of Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud, along with Justices JB Pardiwala and Manoj Misra, invalidated the August 20th notification that broadened the NRI definition for MBBS admissions. The decision aligns with the High Court’s earlier ruling on September 11, which had criticized the move as unjustified, arguing that it contradicted the original intent of providing genuine NRIs opportunities to study in India.
This ruling underscores the judiciary’s commitment to maintaining integrity and fairness in the medical admission process, ensuring that deserving students are not displaced by such quota expansions.
