Record-Setting Day for Kochi Water Metro as Ferries See Unprecedented Demand
In response to heightened demand from commuters and visitors, Kochi Water Metro ran an additional 40 trips in the High Court-Fort Kochi corridor on September 22. A total of 16 Water Metro ferries collectively transported 13,261 passengers that Sunday, setting a new daily ridership record, as per sources within Kochi Water Metro Limited (KWML).
Initially planned to shuttle every 15 minutes, the ferry services were adjusted to run every 10 minutes to accommodate the surge in passengers, largely due to the Onam vacation crowd at Marine Drive. By the end of the day, a total of 200 trips had been made between the High Court Jetty and Fort Kochi alone.
The Cochin Shipyard is projected to deliver an additional seven ferries to KWML by the end of the year, further boosting the Water Metro’s capacity.
