Donald Trump Blasts ‘Dying’ Tonight Show: Jimmy Fallon Under Fire Amid Late Night Cutbacks
Trump’s Critique of Late-Night Shows and Media Comments
Former President Donald Trump recently criticized late-night talk show hosts Jimmy Fallon, Jimmy Kimmel, and Stephen Colbert, labeling their programs as "dying." Speaking at a rally in Pennsylvania on September 23, Trump showcased a clip of Vice President Kamala Harris on Fallon’s Tonight Show, where Fallon made a fracking joke. Trump quipped that Fallon isn’t "very funny," asserting that Fallon, Kimmel, and Colbert are being overshadowed by Fox News’ Greg Gutfeld. Lamenting the state of current late-night TV, Trump nostalgically called for the return of the late Johnny Carson.
The former president’s impassioned remarks about Carson have since gone viral, leading many to wonder if he was serious about resurrecting Carson, who passed away in 2005. This prompted Joy Behar of The View to jokingly suggest a séance for Carson.
Trump’s comments come on the heels of NBC’s announcement to scale back Fallon’s Tonight Show to four nights a week, with Friday reruns due to budget cuts. Additionally, NBC previously eliminated the house band from Late Night with Seth Meyers.
In the rally, Trump openly admitted his personal disdain for those who dislike him, labeling it a "personality defect." Beyond late-night shows, Trump has had ongoing feuds with various media figures, including Bill Maher. Trump recently criticized Maher for calling his rhetoric antisemitic on his HBO show, Real Time with Bill Maher.
During a summit focused on tackling antisemitism, Trump remarked that if he loses the 2024 presidential election, "the Jewish people would have a lot to do with that." Maher sarcastically noted that autocrats blaming Jews typically don’t end well. Trump later rebuked Maher on Truth Social, disparaging the show’s ratings and calling Maher a "befuddled mess."
Trump’s media-related reflections continue to stir substantial discussion, captivating audiences with his outspoken views on the current state of American entertainment and journalism.
