Breaking News: Centre Triumphantly Declares Eco-Sensitive Zone Around Beloved Gir Protected Area
The Centre has designated 1.84 lakh hectares surrounding the Gir Protected Area as an Eco Sensitive Zone (ESZ), according to an official release from the state government. This measure aims to foster a balance between the conservation efforts for Asiatic lions in Gir—home to the world’s only wild population of these lions—and sustainable development.
State Forest Minister Mulubhai Bera explained that the current ESZ covers areas within a 10 km radius from the outer boundaries of the Gir Protected Area, including 196 villages across three districts and 17 rivers. The newly established zone will encompass over 24,000 hectares of forest land and 1.59 lakh hectares of non-forest land.
This expanded ESZ is a strategic effort to enhance the protection of the endangered Asiatic lions while promoting environmentally-friendly development practices in the region.
