Israel’s Intense Airstrikes in Lebanon Cause Devastating Casualties and Mass Displacement
On Monday, Israel launched a massive wave of airstrikes on southern and eastern Lebanon, killing over 356 people, including 24 children and 42 women. The barrage, which targeted more than 800 Hezbollah-linked sites, was the deadliest since the 2006 Israel-Hezbollah war, according to Lebanon’s Health Ministry. In response, thousands of Lebanese fled, creating the largest exodus since 2006, and resulting in severe traffic on the main highway to Beirut.
The Israeli military expanded its operation to the Bekaa Valley, citing Hezbollah’s use of residential areas for weapons storage. This offensive followed Hezbollah’s launch of over 100 rockets into northern Israel, triggered by an Israeli strike that killed a top Hezbollah commander in Beirut last Friday. Additionally, last week saw the explosion of thousands of communications devices in Lebanon, killing 39 and injuring nearly 3,000.
Israel claims its airstrikes have destroyed tens of thousands of Hezbollah’s rockets, significantly depleting the group’s arsenal. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu implored Lebanese civilians to evacuate, stressing the need to avoid harm as the military targets Hezbollah’s infrastructure. Meanwhile, Egypt condemned the strikes, urging international intervention.
President Joe Biden discussed efforts to end the conflict with UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, as part of ongoing diplomatic engagements aimed at de-escalation.
The U.N. peacekeeping force in Lebanon expressed grave concern for civilian safety, warning that further escalation could destabilize the broader region. Lebanon’s prime minister labeled the strikes as "genocide," calling on the U.N. to deter what he described as Israeli aggression.
In the face of intensifying violence, China advised its citizens to evacuate Lebanon and Israel. The situation has triggered a new humanitarian crisis, with both sides claiming significant civilian and military casualties amid the escalating conflict.
