Tumbbad Director Rahi Anil Barve CONFIRMS Departure from Sequel, Teases ‘Insane Trilogy’: Heartfelt Wishes to Sohum Shah and Adesh Prasad
Rahi Anil Barve, renowned director of the critically acclaimed film Tumbbad, has announced that he will not be part of the upcoming sequel to the 2018 horror-fantasy movie. This news comes shortly after lead actor and producer Sohum Shah revealed the sequel’s development. The announcement coincides with Tumbbad’s re-release in theaters on September 13, 2023.
In a post shared on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter), Barve explained his decision to step away from the sequel to focus on a larger project: a trilogy of films. This ambitious trilogy, which began with Tumbbad, will continue with Pahadpangira and conclude with Pakshitirtha. “For decades, I worked on this insane trilogy with many producers changing in between. First was the greed of patriarchy. My personal and much darker version of father, son, and the holy ghost,” Barve wrote.
Barve revealed that Pahadpangira will explore the dawn of feminism and delve into themes related to the oppressive practice of satipratha. However, he did not disclose further details about the final chapter, Pakshitirtha.
Despite his departure from the sequel, Barve extended his best wishes to the Tumbbad II team. “I wish Sohum and Adesh all the best for Tumbbad II; I have no doubt it will be an outstanding success,” he said. Sohum Shah, who played the lead in the original film, congratulated Barve on his upcoming projects. Shah wrote, “Congratulations mere bhai for Gulkanda and Raktabramhand or jaldi Sai shuru kar de Pahadpangira. Maza aayega (sic).” Barve warmly replied, “I am always there for you. Thanks for everything,” to which Shah responded, “Likewise.”
Barve also shared plans to start production on Pahadpangira in March 2025, following the completion of his work on Gulkanda Tales and Raktabramhand, both highly anticipated projects, although details about them remain limited. This shift marks a significant turning point in Barve’s filmmaking journey as he embarks on creating his expansive trilogy.
