Triumphant Victory: India Makes History with Double Gold at Chess Olympiad | MorungExpress
Budapest, September 22 (IANS) – In a landmark achievement, India’s men’s and women’s chess teams claimed gold medals for the first time in history at the 45th Chess Olympiad on Sunday. The Indian men, steered by stellar performances from D Gukesh and Arjun Erigaisi, secured their victory with a nail-biting final round against Slovenia in Budapest. Essential to the triumph, Arjun Erigaisi defeated Jan Subelj, while Gukesh outmaneuvered Vladimir Fedoseev to clinch the decisive point. Gukesh’s skillful display culminated a successful tournament where India also bested top-seeded USA and drew with defending champions Uzbekistan. Reflecting on the victory, Gukesh shared, “Arjun was completely winning, so I thought even a draw would be fine, but I kept finding all the good moves. I am glad, but the main thing was to perform as a team!”
Parallel to this success, the Indian women’s team demonstrated remarkable prowess, also capturing gold. The squad, comprising Harika Dronavalli, Vaishali Rameshbabu, Divya Deshmukh, Vantika Agrawal, Tania Sachdev, and Abhijit Kunte, earned their title with a dominant 3.5-0.5 victory over Azerbaijan. Both teams’ victories mark an unprecedented double gold triumph for India at the Chess Olympiad, enhancing their previous accomplishments of bronze medals in the 2014 and 2022 editions.
The Indian teams exhibited exceptional consistency and resilience, with the men’s team winning eight consecutive matches before a strategic draw against Uzbekistan, and a solid performance to topple tournament favorites USA. The women’s team equally showcased their enduring strength, decisively winning their matches to emerge as champions.
India’s twin golds underscore the nation’s rising prominence in the global chess arena, igniting inspiration and pride among aspiring players and sports enthusiasts across the country.
