Outraged Naga Students Condemn Supreme Court Ruling on Oting Massacre: A Call for Justice and Unity

RNSOM Condemns Supreme Court’s Dismissal of Criminal Proceedings Against Army Personnel Accused in Oting Massacre

The Rongmei Naga Students’ Organization, Manipur (RNSOM) has voiced strong indignation over the Supreme Court of India’s ruling on September 17, 2024, which dismissed criminal proceedings against 30 Indian Army personnel from the 21 Para (Special Forces) implicated in the December 4, 2021, Oting village massacre in Mon District, Nagaland. This tragic event resulted in the deaths of 14 civilians.

RNSOM’s statement condemned the court’s decision, emphasizing the profound injustice faced by the victims and their families. The organization labeled the ruling an affront to justice, calling it a significant setback in the Naga people’s continuous struggle for human rights and self-determination. They criticized the closure of legal actions against the soldiers responsible for what was described as an "inhuman massacre."

Highlighting the systemic issues, the RNSOM pointed to the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (AFSPA) of 1958 as a long-standing source of suffering and oppression in the region. They noted that the Naga people have endured persistent violence under AFSPA, which the organization characterized as a tool of state aggression and suppression.

Moreover, RNSOM raised serious concerns about the integrity of the Indian judiciary in this case. They expressed disappointment, arguing that the judicial system failed to uphold justice for the Oting massacre victims. According to the organization, this failure underscores a broader denial of justice and human rights, contributing to the growing alienation and disillusionment of the Naga people.

This dismissal of criminal proceedings comes as a stark reminder of the ongoing challenges faced by the Naga community in their quest for justice and equitable treatment within India’s democratic framework.
