Bumrah Triumphs with Brave Experiment on Slippery Wicket: A Four-Wicket Masterclass!
News Alert – SPORTS:
Chennai, Sep 20: Jasprit Bumrah emerged as the standout Indian bowler on the challenging Chepauk pitch, recording impressive figures of 4-50 to skittle out Bangladesh for 149 in the first Test at MA Chidambaram Stadium on Friday.
Bumrah shared insights about his strategic experimentation on the second day, given the lack of assistance from the pitch. "The ball was old with minimal movement but some spongy bounce. I assessed my options and focused on making run-scoring difficult. Luck favored me as I managed to get the outside edge off Mushfiqur Rahim," Bumrah told JioCinema after the day’s play.
Facing challenging conditions, Bumrah had to introduce variations in his deliveries. "Bowling a length ball yielded nothing, and there was no reverse swing. I had to experiment since there wasn’t much happening on the wicket, employing tactics similar to those used in domestic cricket," he explained.
He also elaborated on his use of bouncers, an unusual strategy for him in Test matches. "The harsh weather and returning to Test cricket demanded adjustments. With the ball becoming wet from sweat, I resorted to different options to get wickets and make run-scoring tough."
Bumrah shared details of his discussions with captain Rohit Sharma regarding their tactical approach. "Rohit understands the bowlers well. Given the weather and everyone returning after a break, short spells were ideal to maintain effectiveness. With new ball movement, we aimed to capitalize on it," Bumrah stated. Their strategy included altering angles and adjusting length due to inconsistent swing.
India ended the second day at 81/3, boasting a significant lead of 308 runs. Shubman Gill (33) and Rishabh Pant (12) will resume their innings, aiming to navigate early seaming conditions on Saturday.
Earlier, Ashwin’s sixth Test century (113), supported by crucial knocks from Ravindra Jadeja (86) and Yashasvi Jaiswal (56), propelled India to 376 in the first innings after being put in to bat on Thursday.
