13 Assam Boxers Secure Semifinal Spots at National Open Talent Search Championship
Guwahati: Thirteen boxers from Assam have clinched medals by advancing to the semifinals of the REC National Open Talent Search Boxing Championship, currently underway at the Sports Authority of India (SAI) regional centre’s indoor stadium in Guwahati.
The event, organized by the Assam Amateur Boxing Association with support from the Boxing Federation of India (BFI), witnessed notable performances from several Assam boxers.
In the youth women’s 48 kg category, Bharati Kumari defeated Manipur’s Renuka Devi, while her state counterpart Rimpi Pegu triumphed over Nancy Borah. Monika Chubba edged out teammate Aishree Hazarika in the 51 kg category quarterfinal. However, seven boxers from Assam faced defeat in the junior women’s categories.
For the youth men’s division, Junaid Anan secured a semifinal spot in the 60 kg category by defeating Haryana’s Tushar. In the 70 kg category, Assam’s Yuvraj Yadav overcame Andhra Pradesh’s Sai Praneeth Reddy, while Ganga Rabha defeated Nishant from Haryana. Akash Kachari also advanced by beating Haryana’s Aryan Choudhury in the 85 kg quarterfinal. Khela Kharananda, competing in the elite men’s 86 kg category, moved to the semifinals by defeating West Bengal’s Prem Prasad.
The elite women’s division saw five Assam boxers securing semifinal spots. Dweepanjali Daimari defeated Delhi’s Mahek Dara in the 48 kg category, Bhupali bested Uttar Pradesh’s Rashi Sharma in the 50 kg quarterfinal, and Sumitra Brahma triumphed over Neelam Chauhan of Uttar Pradesh in the 54 kg category. In the same weight category, Manju Basumatary won against Haryana’s Bishu Rathi. Additionally, Monalisha Basumatary defeated Madhya Pradesh’s Divya Nagar in the 57 kg category.
The championship, set to conclude on September 30, will feature competitions for youth and elite men and women. Subsequent events for sub-juniors and juniors will follow. Boxers reaching the quarterfinals qualify for the final round, and medal-winners will be selected for advanced training at the national camp. The BFI will provide prize money to each medallist.
