Empowering Hope: Over 1 Lakh Farmers to Receive Rs 1K Lifesaving Financial Aid
Agartala, 16th September 2024: State Government Initiates Financial Aid for Flood-Affected Farmers
The state government has commenced depositing financial assistance into the bank accounts of 1,48,379 farmers affected by recent floods. The initiative, aiming to complete within the week, involves disbursing amounts ranging from Rs 1,000 to Rs 2,950 to each farmer, with a total expenditure of Rs 14.83 crore.
Apoorba Roy, Secretary of the Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Department, announced at a press conference that this financial aid targets 45,248 farmers who suffered losses in cultivating winter vegetables, betel nuts, fruits, and garden crops. Among the recipients, 42,374 vegetable farmers will each receive Rs 1,000, 897 fruit and garden farmers will get Rs 2,000, and 1,977 betel nut farmers will be provided with Rs 2,950 to repair their betel leaf gardens.
The state government has already allocated Rs 20 crore to the Department of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare for interim relief, with Rs 15 crore designated for the agriculture sector and Rs 5 crore for horticulture and garden crops.
Recent floods inflicted severe damage on kharif crop production, resulting in losses estimated at Rs 943.59 crore for 1,48,379 farmers. Additionally, 7,929 organic crop cultivators faced damages amounting to Rs 68.80 crore.
Overall, agricultural crop losses totaled Rs 1,284.93 crore, affecting 45,349 farmers in horticulture with losses estimated at Rs 712.50 crore. Furthermore, 15,799 gardeners have suffered damage due to the accumulation of debris and landslides, with total losses in this regard amounting to Rs 69.89 crore.
This initiative underscores the state government’s commitment to supporting its agricultural community in the wake of natural disasters.
