Elon Musk Ramps Up Security Amid Increasing Threats
Elon Musk, known for his adventurous and public lifestyle, has significantly boosted his security measures as his fame and net worth, currently over $240 billion, continue to grow. This heightened security was notably evident during a Tesla event in Austin, Texas, celebrating the Cybertruck. Despite a security threat from Paul Overeem, who was arrested for planning a "mass casualty event," the event proceeded with more than three dozen Tesla security officials and Musk’s private security on high alert.
Musk, who once traveled with just two bodyguards, now often moves with a security entourage reminiscent of a head of state’s protection detail, including up to 20 security professionals. This team, which sometimes includes armed personnel and a medical professional, ensures his safety by researching escape routes and securing venues before his arrival. Musk’s security expenditures reflect this shift, with Tesla disclosing $2.4 million spent on a portion of his protection in 2023 alone.
In contrast, other billionaires like Warren Buffett and Apple’s Tim Cook have historically spent far less on personal security. Even Jeff Bezos, with $1.6 million in annual security costs, and Mark Zuckerberg, with Meta spending $23.4 million last year, do not match Musk’s current security investments. This evolution highlights the increasing threats Musk faces and his response, transforming his security into a robust operation akin to a mini-Secret Service.
