Women in Nagaland are making notable advancements in higher education, boasting a high representation among tertiary education teachers. According to the Union Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) in the "Women and Men in India 2023" report, Nagaland ranks second in the proportion of female tertiary education teachers in India. Based on data from the All India Survey on Higher Education (AISHE) for the 2021-22 academic year, 56.96% of tertiary education teachers in Nagaland were women. Out of 2370 teachers, 1350 were female, compared to 1020 males.
This proportion has gradually increased from 55.19% in 2018-19 to 56.96% in 2021-22. Kerala leads with 61.33%, while the national average stands at 41.49%. Other states with high proportions include Punjab (56.86%), Chandigarh (56.73%), and Meghalaya (56.32%). Conversely, Bihar has the lowest proportion at 22.06%, followed by Andaman and Nicobar Islands (26.05%) and Uttar Pradesh (30.75%).
Additionally, the report highlights that women in Nagaland also hold significant roles across various levels of higher education employment, except in ‘Professor & Equivalent’ positions. Of 163 positions, 106 were male, and 57 were female. However, women outnumber men as ‘Reader & Associate Professors’ (95 females to 74 males) and markedly as ‘Lecturer/Assistant Professors’ (1198 females to 840 males).
In broader terms, the MoSPI "Women and Men in India 2023" aims to provide a comprehensive view of gender dynamics in India, spanning facets like population, education, health, and economic participation. It underscores progress toward gender equality while highlighting areas needing attention, helping inform policy-making and public awareness.
This trend of increasing female representation in higher education positions in Nagaland showcases significant strides toward gender parity and highlights the region’s progressive stance in empowering women through education.
