Area Sabha Meetings in Thiruvottiyur and Other Chennai Wards Postponed Due to Low Attendance
The scheduled Area Sabha meetings in numerous Greater Chennai Corporation wards, including Mayor R. Priya’s Ward 74, were deferred from Sunday. The primary reason cited was the low turnout of residents, many of whom had left the city for the weekend. The Mayor’s meeting has been rescheduled for Wednesday.
Ward 173 Councillor, D. Subhashini, highlighted health reasons and the inability of Corporation officials to attend multiple meetings simultaneously as additional factors for the postponement. Similarly, Councillor V. Anandam of Ward 176 had to delay his meeting to attend a political event, while Ward 123’s Councillor M. Saraswathi noted the absence of residents due to a festival.
Meetings in some wards proceeded but saw poor resident participation. V.S. Jayaraman from the T. Nagar Residents’ Welfare Association emphasized the need for advance notifications with detailed information to ensure active involvement.
Key issues discussed across the wards included door-to-door garbage collection, dog and cattle issues, water supply shortages, streetlight repairs, and tree trimming. Notably, a unanimous decision was made in Ward 12 to collect household waste daily between 8-8:30 a.m., as overseen by Councillor V. Kaviganesan.
In Ward 10, Councillor T.M. Thaniarasu’s meeting focused on murky water supply concerns, dog menace, and damaged silt catch pits. Zone 10 Chairman, M. Krishna Moorthy, discussed road repairs, with ₹10 lakh allocated per ward, and ₹5 lakh already released for initial patching works.
The need for education department officials to attend the area sabhas was also noted by R. Kungumapriya, an assistant professor and Thiruvottiyur resident.
The postponements highlight the importance of effective communication and scheduling to encourage resident engagement in local governance.
