Mamata Banerjee’s Surprise Visit Sparks Hope: Resolving RG Kar Rape-Murder Crisis Amidst Protesting Doctors
Breaking News: Mamata Banerjee Intervenes in Junior Doctors’ Protest Over Trainee’s Tragic Death
KOLKATA: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee made an unexpected visit on Saturday to the protest site of junior doctors at RG Kar Medical College. The doctors have been on strike following the rape and murder of a trainee doctor, seeking better security and accountability from senior officials.
In a heartfelt address, Banerjee, expressing both empathy and urgency, assured the protesters that their demands would be addressed. She described her visit as a "last attempt" to resolve the ongoing standoff. Inviting the doctors for a meeting at her residence at 6 pm, Banerjee said, "I came here not as your Chief Minister, but as your ‘didi’," emphasizing her personal concern for their well-being.
Acknowledging the strain on the healthcare system due to the month-long protests, Banerjee highlighted her sleepless nights and the shared suffering with the doctors. "The way you are sitting here in the rain, I am suffering too," she stated.
The protests erupted in response to the horrific crime against the young trainee, with junior doctors demanding enhanced security measures in state hospitals and action against high-ranking officials. Banerjee urged the doctors to reconsider her proposal for a meeting, assuring them that her government would not retaliate against them for protesting—a subtle dig at BJP-ruled Uttar Pradesh’s harsh measures.
Her visit followed a failed attempt to dialogue with the doctors at the state secretariat, Nabanna, where talks collapsed over the government’s refusal to webcast the meeting. Nevertheless, her current intervention was seen as a positive step, although the protesting doctors maintained they would only compromise after thorough discussions. "We welcome this step and are ready for transparent talks with proper representation," they stated.
In an effort to build trust, Banerjee announced the immediate dissolution of all patient welfare committees at state-run hospitals, marking a notable concession to the aggrieved doctors. The move is perceived as a significant stride towards resolving the impasse.
