Desperate Meitei Groups Plead for PM Modi’s Crucial Intervention to End Devastating Manipur Violence
Protest at Jantar Mantar Calls for End to Manipur Violence
The Delhi Meetei Coordinating Committee (DMCC), along with the Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI), Meitei Alliance, and Global Manipur Federation (GMF), held a significant protest at Jantar Mantar today. They urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to intervene and safeguard Manipur’s historical and cultural integrity amid 15 months of escalating violence, ongoing since May 2023.
The latest violence, marked by aerial bombings and rocket attacks by Kuki militants, catalyzed the demonstration. On September 1, 2024, a drone attack in Koutruk, Imphal East, claimed the life of 31-year-old mother of two, Surbala. Another strike on September 6 in Moirang Phiwangbam Leikai, Bishenpur district, killed an elderly man and injured six others, including a 13-year-old girl. The rocket attack also damaged the residence of Manipur’s first Chief Minister, Mairembam Koireng Singh.
The DMCC condemned the perceived inaction of central and state governments and criticized the use of violence by Kuki separatists as a political tool. They underscored the ongoing ethnic cleansing and military aggression directed at the Meetei community, which has intensified sectarian tensions and hampered peace efforts.
The protest also highlighted international factors, such as cross-border terrorism and the influence of drug cartels, as contributors to the violence. Protestors accused the Indian government of failing to protect civilians, claiming a bias in actions that targeted Meeteis while allowing Kuki protests to proceed unhindered.
In their memorandum to the Prime Minister, the DMCC demanded the immediate dismantling of Kuki bunkers, cessation of appeasement policies, and restoration of peace and coexistence. They called for an investigation into alleged partisan actions by security agencies and emphasized the need for accountability and trust-building among communities.
The protest underscored the pressing need for intervention to restore stability and harmony in Manipur.
