Urgent Help Needed: Mizoram Appeals for Central Aid to Rescue Desperate Pig Farmers from Devastating Swine Fever Outbreak
The Mizoram government has requested financial aid from the Centre for pig farmers impacted by the African Swine Fever (ASF) outbreak, according to a state-issued statement. State Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Minister C. Lalsawivunga highlighted the severe financial repercussions of ASF on the state’s pig farmers during a ministerial meeting in Odisha.
Lalsawivunga emphasized the urgency for compensation for the affected farmers and called for the swift development or importation of vaccines. He reported to the state assembly that since the ASF outbreak began in March 2021 in Lungsen village near the Bangladesh border, over 57,000 pigs have died, and more than 43,000 have been culled, resulting in nearly Rs 800 crore in losses.
The Centre has provided approximately Rs 7 crore between 2021 and 2023 to aid the farmers, and an additional Rs 74.7 lakh for the 2023-24 fiscal has been approved by the National Steering Committee. Currently, 234 villages across five districts, including Aizawl, remain affected by the outbreak. The ASF outbreak is believed to have originated from pigs illegally imported from Bangladesh.
Mizoram’s government continues to seek comprehensive support from the Centre to mitigate the ongoing crisis and secure the livelihoods of its pig farmers.
