Thousands Uniting for Justice: France Stands Strong for Victim Drugged and Raped for 10 Years
Paris, Sep 14: In a powerful demonstration of solidarity, thousands gathered at Paris’ Place de la République on Saturday to support Gisele Pelicot and all survivors of sexual violence. The demonstrators held placards and banners, passionately chanting, “We are all Gisele!” in recognition of Pelicot’s harrowing ordeal.
Gisele Pelicot, a 71-year-old woman, has become a symbol for victims of sexual violence in France after revealing the atrocities she endured. Allegedly drugged and raped by dozens of men at the behest of her ex-husband over a span of more than ten years, Pelicot’s trial commenced on September 2 at the Vaucluse criminal court. In pursuit of transparency, she declined a closed-door hearing typically granted to rape victims, insisting that “the shame changes sides.”
Her case has ignited global outrage, prompting calls for exhaustive investigations and stringent punishments for offenders. From Friday onward, nationwide protests have been held in support of Pelicot and other rape victims, underscoring a collective demand for justice and systemic change.
Frederique Reibell, a former English teacher, emphasized the need to dismantle patriarchal structures that perpetuate violence. “The patriarchal system kills, rapes, and injures. We must end impunity and rape culture,” Reibell stated in a post on X. Reflecting the widespread sentiment, Pelicot’s testimony aimed to prevent other women from facing similar horrors.
During a deeply emotional 90-minute hearing, Pelicot recounted the brutal acts inflicted upon her. Her courage has resonated across the nation, influencing political figures such as Nathalie Ozio, Deputy of the French National Assembly. “Today we talk about rape culture, patriarchy, and shame that needs to change sides,” Ozio remarked. “This gathering in solidarity with Pelicot and all rape victims honors their experiences and channels our anger into actionable change.”
The case of Gisele Pelicot has galvanized public sentiment and underscored the urgent need for reforms to address sexual violence comprehensively.
