Heartbreaking Kolkata Doctor Rape-Murder: Bengal Doctors Unite in Powerful Cease Work and Sit-In Protest Outside ‘Swasthya Bhavan’
In defiance of a Supreme Court directive, junior doctors in West Bengal extended their work stoppage into its 33rd day on Wednesday. The protest centers on seeking justice for a colleague who was allegedly raped and murdered at R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata in August. Despite Supreme Court orders to return to work by Tuesday evening, the medical professionals are persistently holding their ground, also calling for the removal of senior health officials and the Kolkata Police commissioner.
Their protest continued outside Swasthya Bhawan, the state health department’s headquarters, for a second consecutive day. The state government has invited the protesters to a meeting at Nabanna, the state secretariat, to resolve the standoff. However, the doctors have expressed outrage over the invitation, asserting that it came from the state health secretary, whose resignation they demand, calling the limited representation at the meeting “insulting” and “humiliating.”
The body of the postgraduate medical trainee was discovered on August 9, with a civic volunteer arrested the following day. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is currently probing the case under orders from the Calcutta High Court.
