In a recent session chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Union Cabinet approved a series of impactful initiatives designed to enhance healthcare, infrastructure, and environmental readiness in India.
Ayushman Health Insurance for Seniors:
Under the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB PM-JAY), the government has extended health insurance coverage to all senior citizens aged 70 and above, irrespective of their socioeconomic status. This decision aims to benefit six crore senior citizens from 4.5 crore families, offering them ₹five lakh free health insurance coverage. Prime Minister Modi emphasized this expansion as a commitment to ensuring accessible, affordable, and top-quality healthcare for every Indian.
Mission Mausam:
The Cabinet also approved ‘Mission Mausam,’ a transformative initiative led by the Ministry of Earth Sciences with an outlay of ₹2,000 crore over two years. The mission aims to enhance India’s weather and climate-related research and services, focusing on accurate and timely weather forecasts, air quality alerts, and interventions for extreme weather events. Critical to this mission will be the deployment of advanced radars, satellite systems, high-performance supercomputers, and an automated Decision Support System for real-time data dissemination.
Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana-IV:
In an infrastructural boost, the Cabinet sanctioned the construction of 62,500 km of all-weather roads under the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana-IV, scheduled for 2024-2029. This project will provide new connectivity to 25,000 unconnected habitations and include the construction and upgrading of bridges.
Hydropower Projects:
The Cabinet also greenlit the development of 31,350 MW hydropower projects with a financial outlay of ₹12,461 crore over the next eight years. These modifications aim to foster infrastructure development in remote areas, stimulate job creation, and attract investments in the hydropower sector.
PM Electric Drive Revolution (PM E-DRIVE):
Lastly, the Cabinet approved the PM E-DRIVE scheme with an outlay of ₹10,900 crore, supporting the adoption of electric vehicles, including 24.79 lakh e-2Ws, 3.16 lakh e-3Ws, and 14,028 e-buses. The scheme also paves the way for introducing electric ambulances, marking a significant step towards integrating EVs into the healthcare sector.
These decisions underscore the government’s commitment to holistic development, spanning healthcare, climate readiness, infrastructure, and green energy solutions.
