Revolutionary Government Initiative: Experience Hassle-Free Highway Journeys with Satellite-Based Toll Collection
In an effort to eliminate long queues at highway toll stations, the Union government has launched a satellite-based electronic toll collection system. On Tuesday, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways announced amendments to the National Highways Fee Rules, 2008, allowing the use of the Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) for toll collection. This new technology, based on the U.S. Global Positioning System (GPS) and featuring On-Board Units (OBUs), will operate alongside existing FASTag and Automatic Number Plate Recognition systems.
Vehicles equipped with GNSS OBUs will automatically pay tolls based on the distance traveled. To facilitate this, exclusive lanes for vehicles with GNSS devices will be introduced, reducing the need for manual toll payments. This advanced system aims to provide precise location tracking and promote barrier-free, seamless tolling.
The Indian Highways Management Company Limited (IHMCL), promoted by the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI), previously sought global proposals to develop and implement this technology. The pilot for the satellite-based tolling system is set to begin this year, according to a January report by Mint, with full implementation expected to follow.
The GNSS-based Electronic Toll Collection system is anticipated to bring numerous benefits, including smoother vehicle movement on national highways and a more efficient toll collection process, reducing leakages and curbing toll evasion. Highway users can expect a hassle-free ride, paying only for the distance traveled. This initiative aims to enhance the efficiency and transparency of toll operations, offering a more seamless and comfortable journey for commuters on National Highways.
