Fiery Protest: West Bengal Junior Doctors Rally Outside Swasthya Bhawan for Justice
Junior doctors across West Bengal have refused to resume duties after 5 pm today, participating in a protest organized by the West Bengal Junior Doctors’ Front at Swasthya Bhawan in Salt Lake, Kolkata. Their primary demand is the resignation of the Health Secretary, the Director of Health, and the Director of Health Education (DHE).
Minister of State for Finance, Chandrima Bhattacharya, stated that around 6 pm, the Principal Secretary of Health sent an email to the doctors, inviting them to meet Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. Despite the Chief Minister waiting until 7:30 pm at the state secretariat Nabanna, no representatives from the junior doctors attended.
An email from Health Secretary Narayan Swarup Nigam notified the Junior Doctors’ Front that a 10-member delegation could attend a meeting with senior government officials at Nabanna. However, the Junior Doctors’ Front declined this invitation, citing their demand for the Health Secretary’s resignation as non-negotiable. They also criticized the tone of the communication as disrespectful and insensitive.
The protest continues as junior doctors stand firm on their demands, highlighting the tense standoff between the medical professionals and the state government.
