Historic Launch: Apple iPhone 16 Unveiled Globally from Indian Factories – A Game-Changer Says Ashwini Vaishnaw
Union Railways and Electronics and IT Minister, Ashwini Vaishnaw, announced that Apple’s latest iPhone 16 is being produced and globally launched from manufacturing plants in India. This development aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ‘Make in India’ initiative, reflecting the country’s growing role in producing high-tech products for the global market.
The new iPhones will be available in India starting September 20 and will also be exported to international markets. The production boost is supported by the government’s production-linked incentive (PLI) scheme, which has driven iPhone exports to around $1 billion each month. In fact, iPhone exports from India surged to an impressive $12.1 billion in the 2023-24 fiscal year, up from $6.27 billion in the previous year. Overall, Apple’s operations in India reached a value of $23.5 billion in FY24.
Apple’s manufacturing expansion in India includes direct employment for over 10,000 people during peak festival periods. The iPhone production goal in India is set at over 50 million units annually, part of Apple’s strategy to diversify its manufacturing base away from China. Tata Electronics, Foxconn, and Pegatron are key players in Apple’s manufacturing ecosystem, significantly contributing to job creation.
India’s political stability and conducive government policies have made it a favorable destination for tech giants like Apple, helping the country capture a significant market share previously held by China and Vietnam.
In support of these trends, mobile phone exports from India reached nearly $16 billion in FY24, substantially higher than the $11 billion recorded in FY23. The overall electronic manufacturing industry in India is projected to grow to around $250 billion over the next five years. These developments showcase India’s rising prominence in the global technology manufacturing sector. (IANS)
