Urgent Warning: KSU’s Independent ILP Implementation Sparks Controversy and Concern
KSU Warns Government Over Delays in Implementing Inner Line Permit in Meghalaya
Shillong: The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) has strongly warned the government, threatening to unilaterally implement the Inner Line Permit (ILP) system in Meghalaya if both the central and state governments continue to delay action on the matter.
Expressing deep frustration, KSU president Lambokstarwell Marngar highlighted the inaction on the 2019 ILP resolution, which saw unanimous support from all 60 MLAs but remains unattended by the central government.
The union has also criticized the state government for not enforcing the Meghalaya Residents Safety and Security Act, 2016. This act is designed to address the problems of influx and illegal immigration, which the KSU believes is being neglected.
Marngar reiterated the union’s commitment to tackling illegal immigration with the aid of local indigenous communities, emphasizing that they have been waiting for over 50 years for effective legislation.
Previously, the KSU had taken matters into their own hands by setting up an ILP check gate in Ri-Bhoi district aimed at curbing the entry of suspected illegal migrants.
