Tragic Shooting Attack at West Bank-Jordan Border Crossing Claims Lives of 3 Israelis – Heartbreaking Loss
Three Israelis were fatally shot near the Allenby Crossing between the West Bank and Jordan on September 8, 2024, as a truck driver opened fire, Israeli officials reported. The incident relates to the ongoing conflict in Gaza that began 11 months ago. The gunman, approaching from the Jordanian side, was killed in a shootout with Israeli security forces. The victims were identified as men in their 50s. Jordan, which maintains a critical stance towards Israel’s policies on Palestinians despite a 1994 peace treaty, is investigating the incident.
The West Bank has experienced escalating violence following Hamas’ attack on Israel on October 7, leading to Israeli military raids and an increase in both settler and Palestinian attacks. Concurrently, an Israeli airstrike in Gaza on Sunday killed five people, including two children, a senior Civil Defense official, and two women. The strike targeted a home in the Jabaliya refugee camp, although the Israeli military has not commented.
Gaza’s Health Ministry reports over 40,000 Palestinian deaths since the conflict began, although it does not distinguish between fighters and civilians. The war has resulted in significant destruction and displacement, impacting 90% of Gaza’s 2.3 million people.
On October 7, Hamas militants killed around 1,200 Israelis, mostly civilians, and took approximately 250 hostages, with about 100 still held. Amid ongoing negotiations led by the U.S., Qatar, and Egypt, efforts to achieve a ceasefire and release the hostages have repeatedly faltered. The conflict harks back to the 1967 Mideast war, after which Israel captured the West Bank, Gaza, and East Jerusalem. Israel left Gaza in 2005 but, with Egypt, imposed a blockade following Hamas’ rise to power in 2007.
