Manipur Filmmakers Triumph: Celebrated Victories at Toronto & Kazan Film Festivals
Guwahati, Sept 8: Amidst a backdrop of prolonged ethnic violence, Manipur’s filmmakers are proving that art endures even in turbulent times. Two filmmakers, Lakshmipriya Devi and Haobam Paban Kumar, have recently captured international acclaim, showcasing the resilience and creativity of Manipuri cinema.
Lakshmipriya Devi has made a historic debut with her film “Boong,” which premiered at the prestigious Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF). This significant milestone marks the first time a Manipuri fiction film has featured in TIFF’s Discovery section. “Boong” narrates the touching tale of a boy’s mission to reunite with his family, traveling from Khurukhul village in Imphal West to Moreh, near the India-Myanmar border. The film not only introduces a unique story to global audiences but also highlights Manipur’s rich cultural heritage.
Simultaneously, Haobam Paban Kumar is making a mark at the Altyn Minbar Karan International Film Festival in Russia. His feature films, “Joseph’s Son” and “Nine Hills One Valley,” are showcasing the diversity and depth of Manipuri cinema. “Joseph’s Son” is competing in the main awards section, while “Nine Hills One Valley” is featured in the “The Fate of Indian Tribes” non-competition segment. The festival, known for its emphasis on human values and cross-cultural dialogue, runs from September 6 to 11.
These achievements come at a challenging time for Manipur, which continues to grapple with internal strife. Despite the prevailing turmoil, the international recognition of Devi and Kumar’s films serves as a beacon of hope, demonstrating the unyielding spirit of Manipuri cinema. Their success on the global stage underscores the power of art to transcend adversity and brings attention to the rich, yet often overlooked, cultural legacy of Manipur.
