Urgent Action: Assam Congress Demands Unprecedented Transparency in Major Contracts
Assam Congress President Demands Transparency in Major State Contracts
Bihali: Assam Congress President Bhupen Kumar Bora has urged for transparency in the allocation of major contracts within the state. Addressing a press conference in Bihali, Bora raised concerns about the recent actions of the Chief Minister and his cabinet regarding the recommendations from Justice Biplab Sharma’s report.
Bhupen Kumar Bora specifically referenced the Chief Minister’s approval of 57 out of 67 recommendations from the aforementioned report. He critiqued the decision-making process, emphasizing the need for clarity. "The public deserves to know which suggestions the Chief Minister has rejected. This information should be made available as soon as possible," Bora asserted.
Furthermore, Bora challenged the Chief Minister to disclose the entities awarded major contracts in Assam, highlighting the necessity for transparency to protect the interests of the state’s residents. He responded to the Chief Minister’s claim that the report by Justice Biplab Sharma was being leveraged to deflect from alleged family corruption. Bora urged the Union Cabinet to prioritize and implement five specific recommendations from the Assam Cabinet by December 31.
The Chief Minister had previously announced that the Assam government would enforce 57 out of 67 recommendations by the high-level committee led by retired Justice Biplab Kumar Sharma. These recommendations pertain to the Sixth Schedule of the Assam Accord, designed to ensure constitutional, legislative, and administrative safeguards, aiming to protect, preserve, and promote the cultural, social, and linguistic heritage of the Assamese people.
This committee, chaired by Sharma, was established to define ‘Assamese People’ and devise safeguards for them. Bora added that a cabinet meeting meticulously discussed a roadmap to implement the committee’s recommendations.
In summary, Bhupen Kumar Bora’s call for transparency underscores a critical dialogue about governance and accountability in Assam, urging swift action and open disclosure on pivotal state matters.
