Neeraj’s Stunning Achievement: Overcoming Odds to Qualify for Diamond League Finale in Brussels!
New Delhi, Sep 6: India’s javelin throw sensation Neeraj Chopra has secured a spot in the Diamond League season finale, set for September 13 and 14 in Brussels. The two-time Olympic medalist finished fourth in the overall standings after 14 meetings held globally. Despite missing the final series meet in Zurich, Chopra accumulated 14 points due to his second-place finishes in Doha and Lausanne.
Chopra, 26, trails Czechia’s Jakub Vadlejch by just two points, while Grenada’s Anderson Peters and Germany’s Julian Weber lead with 29 and 21 points, respectively. Peters recently edged out Weber in the Zurich meet.
This season’s finale comes amid Chopra’s ongoing battle with a groin injury, which has hampered his quest to achieve the elusive 90m mark. Despite his physical setbacks, Chopra managed a second-place finish in the Lausanne meet, where Peters threw an impressive 90.61m. Notably, the Tokyo 2021 gold medalist and Paris 2023 silver medalist has highlighted his plans to focus on recovering fully from his injury and improving his throwing technique.
In his illustrious career, the Haryana native has previously won the Lausanne leg in 2022 and 2023. He also finished second behind Vadlejch in last year’s thrilling finale in Eugene, USA. The Diamond League season finale champion is awarded the prestigious Diamond Trophy, a USD 30,000 prize, and a wild card entry to the World Athletics Championships.
As the season finale approaches, all eyes will be on Chopra as he aims to conclude his season on a high note, despite his injury challenges. The finale in Brussels will not only determine the champion but will also signal the end of Chopra’s competitive season.
Stay tuned for more updates from what promises to be an electrifying end to the Diamond League season. (PTI)
