Revolutionary Kavach Collision-Avoidance System to Transform Safety on Ernakulam-Shornur Rail Corridor
In a significant step for Kerala, Southern Railway has called for tenders to install the Kavach collision-avoidance system on the 107-km Ernakulam-Shornur rail corridor. This advanced system, which costs an estimated ₹68 crore, automatically applies brakes if the driver ignores speed restrictions or red signals and prevents collisions between equipped locomotives. The Ernakulam-Shornur corridor, one of the most saturated and curved tracks in the state, is also slated for an automatic signal system and a third track to enhance capacity and efficiency.
The Kavach system, designed by the Research Design and Standards Organisation with Indian industry, is part of a broader initiative to modernize India’s rail network, with installations already covering 1,465 km and expanding to an additional 7,228 km. The tender submission deadline for this project is October 24, with completion targeted within 540 days.
Additionally, KRDCL-RVNL will install an automatic signal system on the 103-km Ernakulam Junction-Vallathol Nagar corridor, funded at ₹156.47 crore and expected to be operational in 750 days, representing the first of its kind in the state. Following these upgrades, Southern Railway plans to construct a third track and double the track in the one-km triangle connecting Vallathol Nagar, Shoranur, and the Palakkad-side railway cabin. These improvements aim to significantly boost rail traffic capacity in Kerala.
