Breaking News: Nagaland Breathes Relief as Centre and NSCN-(K) Niki Secure One-Year Ceasefire Extension
The Government of India and the NSCN-(K) Niki faction have agreed to extend their ceasefire agreement for another year, starting from September 8, 2024. This decision was made during a meeting held in New Delhi on September 4, 2024.
The extension was formalized with a joint signing ceremony. Piyush Goyal, Additional Secretary of the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), represented the Indian government, while the NSCN-(K) Niki faction was represented by Ceasefire Supervisory Board (CFSB) supervisor Abel Zingrü Thuer and secretary Amenka Achumi.
The Ministry of Home Affairs clarified that the ceasefire will adhere to Ceasefire Ground Rules (CFGR) that have been mutually agreed upon by both parties. These rules govern the terms of the truce, and there is provision for review and amendments with the participation of both sides.
This development marks another step in the ongoing efforts to maintain peace and stability in the region. The extension underscores the commitment from both the Indian government and the NSCN-(K) Niki faction to continue dialogue and build on the progress made so far.
