Outrage Erupts as Trinamool Leaders Intimidate R.G. Kar Protestors After Mamata Banerjee’s Provocative ‘Hiss’ Command
In a wave of escalating protests, the West Bengal Junior Doctor’s Front staged a march in Kolkata on September 2, 2024, demanding the immediate resignation of Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal. The protests are in response to the rape and murder of a female doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The tragic incident has incited widespread anger, with Trinamool Congress (TMC) figures, including MPs and MLAs, making contentious remarks and threats toward protesters.
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s provocative speech on August 28 urged her supporters to “hiss” at political opponents, sparking controversy. Following this, a video surfaced featuring TMC leader Atish Sarkar issuing chilling threats to critics of Banerjee. He warned that those disparaging the Chief Minister would find lewd images of their female relatives posted on their homes.
Reacting to the backlash, the Trinamool Congress suspended Sarkar from the party for a year. Meanwhile, actor-turned-MLA Kanchan Mullick faced criticism from the Tollywood industry for questioning the ethics of government employees participating in protests while accepting state benefits.
Further inflaming tensions, North Bengal Development Minister Udayan Guha urged party supporters to retaliate against protesters, promoting a cycle of aggression. Amidst the uproar, TMC MP Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar apologized for her derogatory remarks about female doctors, which drew condemnation from the West Bengal branch of the Indian Psychiatric Society.
Adding to the inflammatory rhetoric, TMC MLA Lovely Maitra declared during a rally that the party would seek revenge in 2024, diverging from its earlier stance of seeking change without retribution. Her comments echoed Chief Minister Banerjee’s recent speech encouraging a shift towards a more aggressive approach.
These events collectively underscore a volatile political climate in West Bengal, characterized by fierce protests and a combative response from TMC leaders. The call for immediate action and accountability continues to resonate strongly among the protesters.
